Gleason and/or Ruutu for Hemsky. Maybe try to send Komi to Charlotte for a bit. We need to keep in mind the Canes are close to the 50 contract limit. So if we did make a trade, it might not be a bad idea to send two players out.

Liles and a prospect for a 6th or 7th rounder and Toronto pays a third for Carolina's benefit.

Don't see the oilers being interested in Gleason. We just cleared salary on a similar player in Smid.

Ruutu is a different story.

Ruutu and Gleason are the two names I would anticipate being moved, just a matter of when and for what return. I also like Liles, but, stated, the Canes D has been playing pretty well. Is it worth the risk to mix it up for the possibility of more offense? It will be interesting to see how everything shakes out. Will JR pull off a gem, a dud or stand pat?

Ruutu at 5M, tied up for another 2 years is most likely to go. Finding a trade partner for him is another story. Straight up for Hemsky, I'd do.

As for Gleason, he's is a heart & soul guy. They don't grow on trees and I would do everything to keep him. The new D looks better, but when and if, one goes down to injury, your be happy to still have Gleason. Will see what JR does, but doesn't look like many realistic options are out there.

How has komi been so far for you guys? I figured it would be good value (his contract) but haven't seen him play this year

I think the trick with Liles (from Toronto's standpoint) is finding a team where they are thin enough that they slot him as a #4. In that role and for virtually nothing in trade, paying 2/3 of his salary (so about $2.6M) is close to reasonable especially if that team has no other options.

But for the Canes specifically, the defense is playing real well. Tim Gleason should be healthy enough to play in the next few days or week and personally, I would leave him at #7 and probably work him in to get fresh legs and a rest for someone in a back-to-back.

So while more offense on the back end would be enticing, I do not see the team breaking up what is working. That puts Liles as 1 of 3 who are not even in the lineup.

There might be a case for 1 of 2 things:
--Cutting cost and adding a different skill set in getting rid of Gleason and adding Liles but now you have not 1 but 2 trades (no way Tor wants Gleason obviously) which is complicated.
--Trading Komisarek and adding Liles at half cost. Again, there are 2 deals which is complicated, and I am skeptical that the Canes would take on an additional $1.1M of salary (Liles at 1/2 over Komisarek) just to improve what is probably #8 on their depth chart.

Shorter version: I think it takes movement of Gleason for the Canes to even consider Liles regardless of price and with his NTC that looks unlikely.

He looked rusty in training camp which combined with Bellemore's rising got him slotted at #8. In the couple games he has played he was a decent serviceable defenseman minus any big problems but not spectacular either.

This is the best D we've had since at least 2006. Why mess with it now?

Matt, I think you hit the nail on the head.

My guess it the Canes are investigating Liles as a #7 D replacement should they find a willing trade partner for Gleason.

I think skill wise he has been moved down to the 6/7 spot and leadership wise, we've already transitioned his A to Faulk, so he's the most likely and valuable piece to move. Gleason goes out (for a top 9 scoring forward), Liles comes in (for a late draft pick and Tor eating a portion of his salary) and you've essentially kept the D in the same state while adding some scoring punch to the forward line. The goal here should be to find a guy who can mesh with Lindholm and Skinner for the short term future.

Liles is still good. It's his contract - if he was making less he is EASILLY still a good NHL defenseman (he is not another komi or jeff finger)

I think having Gleason back playing near his potential would be a very much needed asset in the playoffs . This is where we would need a big physical D-man that isn't scared to drop the gloves and stick up for our smaller fowards. He also finishes alot of checks ......
